What Does "Flatten PDF" Mean?

Form flattening makes field appearances part of the page. Image mode instead renders pages as pictures. Both outputs can still be edited with suitable software.

📝

Form Fields

Text inputs, checkboxes, dropdowns become static text

📌

Annotations

Kept in form mode; rendered as visible appearances in image mode

💬

Comments

Kept in form mode; interactive comment data is lost in image mode

📄

Layers

Kept in form mode; only the rendered appearance survives image mode

Flatten Options

Form mode makes filled fields static and keeps other annotations and links. It does not flatten comments or layers. Image mode creates JPEG pages: visible appearances are rendered, while searchable text, links, form fields, attachments, bookmarks and accessibility tags are lost. Neither mode makes a PDF impossible to edit. Saving can invalidate digital signatures; keep your original.
