The default mode resaves the whole PDF with compressed object streams while retaining document content. It may produce little or no saving. Optional image-based compression renders pages as JPEG images and removes searchable text, interactive links, forms and accessibility tags. The smaller result is used only when it saves space.
Understanding quality levels
Structural optimization — the default, with no page rendering and no guaranteed size reduction.
Image-based compression — optional and destructive to document features. Quality is estimated from the first page, so mixed documents may remain above the target.
Original file — returned when neither selected method produces a smaller file.
Common use cases
Check your destination's upload limit and the actual output size. Open the result and inspect small text, images and filled fields before submitting it. Saving a signed PDF can invalidate its digital signature; keep your original.
Privacy
